This policy covers the iPhone app MeterMind / MeterSnap and the website at metersnap.jahaus.de.
In short
- There is no MeterSnap account: no sign-up, no email address, no password.
- There is no tracking, no advertising and no analytics. The app contains no third-party code.
- Your meters, readings and tariffs are stored on your device and synced automatically via your own iCloud. I have no access to them; there is no separate server for app data.
- Text recognition of meter readings runs entirely on your device.
- If you take or import a photo and confirm the value, the app stores the photo with the reading and also syncs it via your iCloud.
What the app stores
- Meters: name, type (electricity, gas or water), meter number if you enter or confirm it, installation date, whether the meter is active, for gas the conversion factor to kWh, and details of a meter replacement.
- Readings: meter value, date and time, whether you typed the value or took it from recognition, the recognition confidence, an optional note and, where applicable, a photo (see below).
- Tariffs: unit price, base price, currency, validity period, an optional supplier name and the meter the tariff belongs to.
- Setting on the device: whether you have already seen the introduction.
The app writes technical messages to your device’s system log, for example whether saving worked. Meter values, names and meter numbers are not included. This log stays on your device.
Camera, photos and text recognition
- Live recognition: With your permission the app uses the camera to recognise the meter value in the camera image. No image is stored.
- Photo mode: If live recognition is not available on your device, the app takes a photo and analyses it.
- Photo from your library: You pick an image in the iOS photo picker. The app only sees the image you pick, not the rest of your library.
- Stored photos: If you confirm the meter value after a photo in photo mode or from your library, the app stores the photo (as a reduced-quality JPEG) with that reading. It is synced via your iCloud like all other data. The app currently does not display the photo; it is deleted when you delete the reading. Try to make sure the photo shows little more than the meter.
- Adding a meter from a photo: If you pick a photo while adding a meter, the app only analyses it and does not store it.
- Text recognition: Recognising numbers and meter numbers uses Apple’s text recognition and a digit model built into the app. Both run on your device; images are not sent anywhere for this. You check and confirm the recognised value yourself before it is saved.
Import from Energy Checker
Under “Import data” you can pick a backup file of the Energy Checker app (.ecbackup). The app reads the file on your device and takes over meters, readings and cost details from it. The file itself is neither stored nor sent anywhere. There is currently no export function.
Sync via iCloud
If you are signed in to iCloud on your device, the app also stores all the data listed above, including photos, in your private iCloud database (CloudKit) and keeps it in sync automatically across your devices with the same Apple ID. The app has no switch of its own for this; you control iCloud in the iOS Settings under your name and “iCloud”.
This data is kept in your iCloud account with Apple, not with me. I can neither see, change nor delete it. Apple processes it under your agreement with Apple and Apple’s Privacy Policy (apple.com/legal/privacy). If you are not signed in to iCloud, the data stays on your device only; the app does not show a separate notice for this. Only if the app cannot set up its iCloud storage at launch does it tell you that sync is not available.
Purposes and legal bases
- Providing the app (meters, readings, tariffs, calculating consumption and costs, recognition, import, sync via your iCloud): Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR, because you use the app under the terms of use.
- Storing on your device: The app only stores what it strictly needs for the service you request (Section 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG).
- Running and protecting the website: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. My legitimate interest is a secure, reachable website.
- Crash reports: If you have agreed in the iOS Settings to share analytics and crash data with app developers, Apple provides me with anonymised crash reports. With the same setting (“Share with App Developers”), Apple also gives me anonymous usage figures (App Analytics); I receive no content of your data. I use them only to fix bugs (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). You can turn this off in the iOS Settings under “Privacy & Security”, “Analytics & Improvements”.
- Emails to me: see “Contact by email”.
This website
The website runs on my own server in Germany. It sets no cookies, uses no analytics or tracking tools and loads no content from other providers, not even external fonts. The server keeps no access log: it stores neither your IP address nor the pages you open. It only writes messages about its own start-up and technical errors to the system log; these contain no data about visitors.
The server is reached through a tunnel operated by Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc.). The encrypted connection ends at Cloudflare and is forwarded from there. In doing so, Cloudflare processes your IP address, the time, the paths requested, your browser or device identifier and, technically, the content transferred, as a processor. This serves delivery and protection against attacks.
Who receives data
- Apple (for users in the EU: Apple Distribution International Ltd., Ireland; part of the group of Apple Inc., USA) stores your app data in your iCloud, distributes the app via the App Store and, if you have agreed, provides me with crash reports. Apple processes what happens during download under its own responsibility.
- Cloudflare, Inc. (USA) when you visit this website, as described above.
- netcup (netcup GmbH, Karlsruhe, Germany) runs my email service, as a processor. Only emails you send me are kept there.
Transfers to the USA: Cloudflare is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (adequacy decision of the European Commission; checked on 22 October 2026); in addition, the Cloudflare Data Processing Addendum with EU Standard Contractual Clauses applies. According to its Privacy Policy, Apple bases transfers from the EU on EU Standard Contractual Clauses. You can request a copy of the safeguards for Cloudflare at info@jaszka.com.
I do not sell data and do not pass it on to anyone else.
Contact by email
If you email me, I process your email address, your name if you give it, the content of your message and the time. I use this only to reply and to handle your request.
- Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR if it concerns your use of the app; otherwise Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, my legitimate interest being able to answer requests. For requests about your rights, Art. 6(1)(c) GDPR in conjunction with Art. 12 GDPR.
- Retention: I delete your email once your request is settled, unless statutory retention periods apply. I keep requests about your rights as evidence for up to three years after completion (Art. 5(2) GDPR, limitation under Section 195 BGB).
How long data is kept
- Meters, readings, photos and tariffs: until you delete them in the app. The app also removes deleted data from your iCloud once the device has synced.
- System log of the website server: at most 14 days; the server’s operating system deletes older entries automatically.
- Connection data at Cloudflare: Cloudflare uses it only for forwarding and protection against attacks and keeps it only as long as necessary for that. Cloudflare does not state a fixed period.
- Emails to me: see “Contact by email”.
Deleting data
You delete your app data yourself in the app. I have no access to it and therefore cannot delete it for you.
- One reading including note and photo: open the meter, tap the trash icon of the reading in the history.
- A meter: gear icon at the top right, “Manage meters”, pick the meter, “Delete meter”. All readings and tariffs of this meter are deleted with it.
- A tariff: in the “Tariffs” tab, tap the trash icon of the tariff.
- Everything: gear icon at the top right, “Delete all data”, then “Permanently delete all data”. This deletes all meters, readings, photos and tariffs.
With iCloud, deleted data also disappears from your iCloud and your other devices once they have synced. If you only delete the app from your iPhone, the data remains in your iCloud. To remove it as well, use “Delete all data” first while you are online.
Your rights
You have the right of access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18) and data portability (Art. 20). You may object to processing based on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR on grounds relating to your particular situation (Art. 21). You see, change and delete meters, readings and tariffs directly in the app. The app currently does not display reading notes or stored photos; you delete them together with the reading. You correct readings and tariffs by deleting them and adding them again. For everything else, an email to info@jaszka.com is enough. I reply within one month (Art. 12(3) GDPR).
There is no automated decision-making, including profiling.
You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, for example the authority where you live (Art. 77 GDPR).
Do you have to provide data?
Without meters and readings the app cannot calculate anything. Meter number, notes, tariffs, photos and iCloud are optional.
Changes
If the app changes so that other data is involved, I will update this policy. The version with the latest date at the top applies.
